Rhett Reese Shoots Down Secret Michael Bay ThunderCats Movie Rumor
Sorry Snarf fans, Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds aren’t working on a secret ThunderCats movie.
A bizarre rumor suggested that Netflix’s upcoming Six Underground was actually the working title for a covert ThunderCats project. Apart from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick working on the script for Six Underground, the only other details are an all-star cast that includes the likes of Reynolds, Mélanie Laurent and Dave Franco.
When several sites began sharing articles about Bay and Reynolds potentially working on their secret ThunderCats movie, /Film made an argument for and against the rumor. In response to the article, Rhett Reese posted to Twitter a simple: “No.”
While the original source of the rumor was said to be anonymous, IGN Middle East claimed it was “reliable.” Considering it’s apparently the same source that revealed Simon Pegg would be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, ThunderCats fans went into overdrive about the possibility of a gritty and Deadpool-esque ThunderCats with all the explosive action of a Michael Bay movie.
In 2007, video game art director Jerry O’Flaherty was linked to a ThunderCats movie, but apart from some CGI test footage making its way onto YouTube, nothing ever came from the idea. Since then, Michael Bay has circled a possible adaptation, Milla Jovovich has said she would love to play Cheetara and even Deadpool‘s Ed Skrein showed an interest in portraying Panthro or Lion-O.
Meanwhile, Cartoon Network is moving forward with a new animated series that shifts the franchise toward a more kid-friendly tone, meaning that a ThunderCats movie from Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds might be a little out of place. Also, with Warner Bros. thought to be the home of a possible movie, it would be strange to see such a film released through Netflix.
With Six Underground being given one of the largest Netflix budgets ever at an impressive $150 million — and hopes that it will spawn a franchise similar to Bright — it isn’t hard to see why the ThunderCats rumor got traction. Bay may be known for reinventing nostalgic ’80s franchises, but for the time being it looks like he is focusing on filming Six Underground in Florence.
As it stands, Six Underground might actually be a movie about six billionaires who fake their own deaths and form a team to fight evil. Either way, it doesn’t sound like fans will be getting to see a ThunderCats movie any time soon.
