Jake Johnson to Lead Animated Netflix Comedy Series 'Hoops' From Phil Lord, Chris Miller
The streamer has handed out a 10-episode order to 'Hoops,' as the streamers' push for animated fare continues to ramp up.
The animation push continues.
Netflix has handed out a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for Hoops, an animated comedy created by Ben Hoffman (Archer, New Girl) and exec produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) with Jake Johnson set to lead the voice cast.
Hoops revolves around a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who thinks turning around his God-awful team will take him to the "big leagues." New Girl grad Johnson will voice the lead character of Coach Ben Hopkins.
Hoffman created the series and will write the series. He'll exec produce alongside Lord, Miller and Johnson. Lord Miller president of television Seth Cohen will also exec produce the series, which hails from 20th Century Fox Television, where Lord and Miller have their overall deal. Bento Box (Bob's Burgers) will handle animation for the half-hour comedy. Aubrey Lee will also oversee the comedy for Lord Miller Productions.
Hoops marks Lord and Miller's second animated TV series order in weeks, joining Fox's Bless the Harts. Both series mark their follow-ups to Fox's Last Man on Earth, Making History and live-action/animated hybrid Son of Zorn. This is their first Netflix series. The longtime collaborators have had success with animated feature films including Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel, The Lego Movie and its offshoots, The Lego Batman Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie as well as the upcoming Smallfoot, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Lord and Miller are repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
For Johnson, the role marks his first TV follow-up since wrapping seven seasons of Fox's New Girl. Hoops will reunite Johnson with Lord and Miller after he voiced the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Johnson, whose credits also include Jurassic World, Neighbors and Let's Be Cops, is with UTA, 3 Arts and Jackoway Tyerman. Hoffman is repped by UTA and 3 Arts.
Hoops also represents the latest animated sale from 20th TV, which started with Apple's Central Park, continued with Hulu's Solar Opposites and Fox's Bless the Harts. Furthermore, animated entry The Great North is in development at Fox.
Hoops arrives as streamers Netflix, Amazon and Hulu have all been ramping up animated comedies of late. At Netflix, Hoops joins an animated roster that includes Disenchantment, BoJack Horseman, Tuca and Bertie and more. Amazon's slate includes Undone andInvincible; Hulu recently picked up two seasons of Solar Opposites, which joins a library that includes Bob's Burgers, Family Guy and South Park. Meanwhile, Adult Swim handed out a massive 70-episode renewal for Emmy winner Rick and Morty as Apple has also entered the animated space with a two-season order for Central Park, which also hails from 20th TV. On the broadcast side, Fox has been going strong with The Simpsons and Family Guy and recently went straight to series on Bless the Harts, featuring a voice cast led by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell and Ike Barinholtz from Lord and Miller.
